Ft. Wright Elementary

Location: Ft. Wright, Kentucky
Architect: PCA Architecture (Emboss Design)

This project involved the renovation and addition to an existing elementary school in Ft. Wright, Kentucky. The majority of the original structure was single-story steel-framed with masonry bearing walls. The middle part of the original building did have a lower level. The addition included a single-story addition at the south end of the campus for a new cafeteria and loading dock. The more challenging aspect, however, was the second-floor addition over the existing single-story portion of the northern part of the original building. The original structure was not designed for a second level and geotechnical complications required installing new drilled pier foundations within the confines of the original building footprint for support of new steel columns. The existing roof was removed and the existing masonry walls of the original single-story structure were laterally braced off the new second floor structure. The northern most end was largely demolished and reconstructed. Masonry and concrete shear walls were utilized for the overall lateral resistance of the structure. A composite steel floor structure was used for the second floor and supported by steel columns and masonry or concrete bearing walls. Insulated concrete form walls were typically used for new wall construction that bore on new foundations with masonry being applied to match the existing in specific areas. The perimeter walls of the second floor over the existing single-story area were constructed of
